  • Billy Graham is a Charlotte native.  He is an evangelist that is known around the world and has met with many presidents.
  • The 11th president, James Polk, was born in Charlotte.
  • Charlotte is located at 35 degrees, 13 minutes, 44 seconds north latitude and 80 degrees, 50 minutes, 45 seconds west longitude.
  • Charlotte has a rich racing heritage.  Charlotte opened an auto racing track in October of 1924.  This was a wooden track and 50,000 spectators attended the first race.  It also is the site for the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
  • During the Revolutionary War, a British commander named Cornwallis held Charlotte for two weeks.  During the two weeks his forces were continuously attacked by locals.  He left after the two weeks calling Charlotte a “veritable nest of hornets”.  The nickname stuck and the city is still referred to as a Hornets Nest.
  • Charles Kuralt, from the CBS “On The Road” fame, was raised in Charlotte and a reporter with The Charlotte News.
